Autonomous stores<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u2018Autonomous Stores: Sociotechnical Infrastructures, Imaginaries and Data Governance\u2019<\/span> is a <\/span>research<\/span> projec<\/span>t<\/span> funded by FCT (<\/span>ref. 2022.02730.PTDC<\/span>) <\/span>and<\/span> led by Prof. Ana Viseu (PI)<\/span>. Hosted at <\/span>ICNOVA<\/span>, it is composed <\/span>of<\/span> a <\/span>multidisciplinary team,<\/span> it aims to <\/span>examin<\/span>e<\/span> the imaginaries and practices behind the <\/span>emergence of so-called ‘autonomous stores’.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u2018<\/span>A<\/span>utonomous store<\/span>s<\/span>\u2019<\/span> are <\/span>often characterized <\/span>in the media <\/span>as the future of shopping: <\/span>intelligent spaces without cashiers or employees and filled with <\/span>tech that <\/span>can identify consumers and their actions, saving time and increasing convenience. <\/span>References to <\/span>autonomy and <\/span>automation invoke a set of imaginaries related to ideas of <\/span>technological <\/span>innovation and progress. <\/span>Despite the name \u2018autonomous\u2019<\/span>, these spaces rely on vast infrastructures that involve people, knowledges, and numerous technologies (such as, Internet of Things, AI, sensors, algorithms, computer vision, machine learning).<\/span> <\/a>This project explores the digital and material infrastructures <\/span>and practices <\/span>of these stores to understand the worlds they are creating. <\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Portugal is <\/span>one of the<\/span> leader<\/span>s<\/span> of<\/span> this future-making endeavor. In 2019 – just one year after Amazon displayed its \u2018Just Walk Out\u2019 (or Amazon Go) shop – SENSEI, a Portuguese unicorn specialized in the development of autonomous stores technologies, partnered with SONAE, one of the largest Portuguese retail chains, to open \u2018Continente Labs\u2019.\u00a0 One year later, Pingo <\/span>Doce – another supermarket chain – opened its own \u2018Lab Store\u2019. Since then, these companies have been making strides in the field, both nationally and abroad.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The core goal of this project is to examine how autonomous stores are discursively and materially constituted, maintained and used. <\/span>In other words, we seek to examine the worlding practices (Haraway 2016) of these infrastructures to ask what worlds they produce, transform, and reify, and with what implications. <\/span>To do we draw upon two complementary research questions:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    This project is also a springboard for a future application for EU research funding, with an international consortium, for a broader study of the constitution and functioning of digital infrastructures, an issue that is all the more important because large parts of our lives are increasingly shaped and spent \/of\/in\/with data.<\/span><\/p>
